Today we’re celebrating 12 years of the best friendship anyone could ever have.
Smurfette is one of the characters from the 1958 Belgian comic strip, (French: Les Schtroumpfs) The Smurfs created by cartoonist, Peyo and later, Hanna-Barbera’s 1981 cartoon show, Smurf’s Adventures. Smurfette was created by the evil wizard Gargamel, the Smurf’s long-standing enemy, in order to spy on them and sow jealously throughout their village. But much to his chagrin, the overwhelming love and goodness of the Smurfy way of life made her want to be a real Smurf and live in harmony with them. So Papa Smurf cast a spell which transformed her into a real Smurf. And the rest is history.
Full disclosure, we dabbled a wee bit with photoshop to alter the color of Mia’s face to fully capture that Smurfy look. Oddball conspiracy theories aside, Stop trying to destroy my already fragile childhood! I was a huge fan of The Smurfs growing up. When I was 18 years old I would set my alarm to wake up at 4 in the morning just to watch an hour of re-aired Smurfs episodes and then go back to sleep for a few hours before I needed to get up and get ready for work. My auntie and uncle, who I was living with at the time thought it was completely bonkers. Looking back, I have to admit it was quite a Smurfy commitment and it gives me a little chuckle thinking about it. I can now understand them being perplexed then.

Mia @ 6 weeks old.
Mia @ 631 weeks old.
As we’re gearing up for Mia’s Gotcha Day! 12 year anniversary happening in exactly two weeks, I thought it would be cute to attempt a recreation of one of her baby photos similar to what we did last year for her Gotcha Day!. And what perfect timing than to re-enact her 6-week old photo. We were fortunate that our breeder and friend allowed us to visit Mia every few weeks leading up to us getting to take her home. I believe it helped establish a strong bond between us well before she left her littermates and fur mamma. It made the transition all the more pleasant for us all. If you don’t know the story of how Mia and I met and became a couple, you can read about it here. Clearly we didn’t exactly nail it, but I love her back legs in both photos. She just wasn’t feeling exactly chill enough to relax on my not so comfortable leg and look at Kari while she snapped the photo. Well, we tried.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Heroes in a half-shell
Turtle power!!
They're the world's most fearsome fighting team
(We're really hip!)

They're heroes in the half-shell and they're green
(Hey, get a grip!)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
When the evil Shredder attacks
These Turtle boys don't cut him no slack!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Splinter taught them to be ninja teens
(He's a radical rat!)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Leonardo leads, Donatello does machines
(That's a fact, Jack!)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Raphael is cool but rude (Gimme a break!)
Michelangelo is a party dude (Party!)

Today we’re honouring Frida Kahlo. Born July 6, 1907, Coyoacán, Mexico City, Mexico, Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for her many portraits, self-portraits, and works inspired by the nature and artifacts of Mexico. Inspired by the country's popular culture, she employed a naïve folk art style to explore questions of identity, postcolonialism, gender, class, and race in Mexican society. She died July 13, 1954, at the devastatingly young age of 47. Here are a few facts and quotes. But please visit the website, fridakahlo.org for more info and to view her pieces.
Numerous articles, books and documentaries have been made about Kahlo's life and art, including the bestseller Frida: The Biography of Frida Kahlo (1983) by Hayden Herrera. The movie 'Frida, Naturaleza viva' was released in 1983 and was a huge success. In 2002 another biographical film 'Frida', in which Salma Hayek plays her role, grossed over $US 50 million and won two Academy Awards.
In her career, Frida Kahlo created 143 paintings out of which 55 are self-portraits. Kahlo said, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best." Her self portraits often include interpretations of physical and psychological wounds. Frida Kahlo's self-portraits are considered among the finest ever created. Her most famous self-portrait is perhaps Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird.
Kahlo died 20 days after her 47th birthday on July 26, 1954. A few days before her death, she wrote in her diary: "I hope the exit is joyful - and I hope never to return - Frida". Kahlo was moderately successful during her lifetime and it was only several years after her death that her work became widely acclaimed. During her lifetime she was mainly known in Mexico as Rivera's wife, now she is popular worldwide and Rivera is known as her husband.
“I used to think I was the strangest person in the world but then I thought there are so many people in the world, there must be someone just like me who feels bizarre and flawed in the same ways I do. I would imagine her, and imagine that she must be out there thinking of me too. Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it's true I'm here, and I'm just as strange as you.” ~ Frida Kahlo

COVID-19 ruined year 2020. I mean, am I right?.
We celebrated Mia’s new year with our every bday traditions, surprise breakfast in bed with second helpings. We enjoyed opening gifts and enjoying as much sun outside as possible. And like all birthdays we capped it off with a photoshoot. This photo is then used for our friend’s upcoming birthday greetings on social media. I (Agent J) had planned this year’s theme for almost a year. My first thought was to have her wearing the cake like a dress, but her being older she no longer can comfortably stand up like a rabbit on her hind legs. So I have to switch gears and decided to have her jumping out of a cake. Once I had that all sorted, I got to work. I spent an entire weekend making her giant unicorn sprinkle cake and cake topper fascinator. The setup was quick and per usual she got the shoot within a few frames. I cannot believe our Frenchie girl is 12.
A week leading up to Mia’s birthday, we added little sneak peek photos on social media to build up buzz and give our friends clues of what this year’s photoshoot theme could possibly be.

Another revamp of an oldie but goodie photo. See the original here.
Be Well & Stay Safe!
Mia enjoys her outside time laying in her yard and soaking up as much of Summer sun as possible. We’re going to take a break on the photo shoots and playing dress up to allow her to rest and heal from a recent eye injury. Bare with us, we may share some revamped previous photos using fun filters that’ll be relevant for the time.
